COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

SEGERA'S COMMUNITY GOES WAY BEYOND

ITS BOUNDARIES

Every stay contributes to the livelihoods and traditional cultures of  local communities. Unique opportunities are offered to visitors to learn from and about the indigenous people, their centuries-old traditions and ways of life. Segera not only provides employment for nearby villages, but also a wide range of opportunities to improve livelihoods by harnessing traditional skills such as beading and traditional knowledge of medicinal plants.

EDUCATION

The results of the programs have been incredible. The ZEITZ foundation has built 6 schools that educate 1,800 local kids, including the "Waterbank School” which harvests rainwater and won LEED Architecture’s “Greenest School In The World” award.

COLLABORATION

SATUBO - a collaborative beading and sewing collective has united Samburu, Turkana and Borana tribes-women and helped support many families, some with single mums at their head.

AGRICULTURE

The Greater Segera Perma Culture gardens and Tree of Life forest nursery are providing sustainable opportunities to understand co-planting techniques, seed scarification and more.

CONSERVATION

East Africa's first female rangers academy launched on Segera in 2019 and has graduated women who now work in the Segera Rhino Sanctuary Ops team and our Anti-Poaching Canine Tracker Unit.

As a guest you are welcomed by the community to engage with and experience some beautiful Kenyan traditions.
